Design and Technology

Intent

It is our intent that through Design & Technology children will develop a wide range of transferable skills as they use their creativity and imagination to design and make a range of products using a variety of materials, considering their own and others’ needs, wants and values.  Pupils learn how to work collaboratively, take risks, become resourceful, innovative, enterprising and capable citizens.  Through the evaluation of past and present design and technology, they develop a crucial understanding of its impact on daily life and the wider world. We will explore the development of new materials and how environmental factors influence our choice of materials.

Implementation

DT lessons will provide opportunities for all children to become confident in using a variety of tools and processes to make their own products in a variety of materials. Children will learn to manage risks and use safe and hygienic methods of production. Lessons have a clear learning outcome, explicit teaching of knowledge and skills and opportunities to develop and apply learning in a range of contexts.   Within lessons, we give children the opportunity both to work on their own and to collaborate, listening to other children’s ideas and treating these with respect. Children will develop their creative, team working and analytical skills through DT. Mathematical knowledge will be applied throughout the study of DT thorough measuring, weighing, cutting and costing the materials for their products. Children critically evaluate existing products, their own work and that of others. The children will make ethically responsible decisions through their choice of materials and through the sources of the supply of materials. The children of Silkstone Primary School will broaden their knowledge of designers and technological innovations and the impact of new technological developments on world.  Formative assessment is ongoing throughout each and every lesson. It judges progress and enables teachers to make flexible adaptions to their planned teaching to ensure that tasks are matched to the ability of each child, which enables a level of challenge for all.  We use summative assessment identify any gaps or misconceptions to be addressed or passed onto the following teachers.

Impact

Our children enjoy the self-expression that they experience in Design Technology. They are always keen to learn new skills and work hard to perfect those shown to them. The children’s study of DT is cross-curricular, and helps them develop their knowledge and understanding in maths, history, geography and science. Through DT lessons, the children are able to make informed choices about the environment and healthy diets as well as taking creative risks. The products the children make have a practical use, with some products being sold to raise money for good causes.
